Celebrating the release of “Aspra,” a masterful sonic journey across ambient drone and experimental left-field sounds, Mithra, a US-based vinyl label, has forged a path that transcends conventional music boundaries. This project, a collaborative effort uniting 14 well-known artists from the underground music community, delves into a speculative mythology set in a distant, interspecies future. The physical embodiment of this endeavor—a cassette tape—is symbolically interred at the peak of Monte Aspra in Italy’s remote Sibillini mountain range, transforming these diverse sounds into an auditory letter from humanity to a multi-species world.

Mithra, known for its pursuit of groundbreaking musical gems from the past and future, reached out to these artists, challenging them to step beyond the confines of dance music. Sharing the speculative story and intention behind the tape, Mithra encouraged the artists to tap into their inner sun worshipper. The result is a tape with two contrasting sides: Side A immerses listeners in an ambient drone journey, while Side B takes a more experimental left-field approach, exploring the moods of dark and light, tension and release. This duality offers a visceral journey into a Mithraic mindset.

The artists involved in “Aspra” are deeply intertwined and respected within various scenes around the world, including New York, Atlanta, Miami, Berlin, Barcelona, Venice, and Puerto Rico. Their diverse backgrounds contribute to the rich tapestry of sounds and styles, reflecting the constancy of the sun—a symbol central to Mithra. This curated concept stands as a testament to the label’s dedication to providing a platform for artists to express themselves in ways that transcend traditional genre boundaries.

The accompanying codex, included with the cassette, invites listeners to explore the myth set in a post-human future, where Earth is re-inhabited by new species adapting to an ever-transforming climate. This setting, amidst the ruins of the old world, is ripe with fertile ground for new ideas, captured in the theme of a ‘Nature Comeback Apocalypse’ blended with ‘Urban Explorations.’ It portrays an apocalyptic future where nature reclaims urban landscapes, oscillating between desolate cityscapes and thriving natural environments.

“Aspra” is more than a collection of tracks; it’s a meticulously crafted mosaic of sound, inviting listeners to envision a world where nature and civilization converge and diverge in an ongoing dance. This release marks a defining moment for Mithra, the artists involved, and the global listening community, boldly venturing into new musical frontiers.
